Academic Staff

Faculty Members

Faculty members are elected and appointed, depending on their formal and substantive qualifications, in three ranks, which are in hierarchical order as follows: Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor. Professors and Associate Professors are permanent, Assistant Professors serve for a fixed term. Assistant Professors may become permanent, following a special judgment.

ΤThe work of faculty members is educational, research and administrative.

  • The educational work includes teaching, namely: conducting university lectures, organizing, supervising and/or conducting tutorials and workshops, supervising theses, checking and grading student performance, etc.
  • The research work includes the study and elaboration of selected scientific topics with the aim of promoting knowledge in a specific field of science, the organization of scientific meetings (symposia, workshops, conferences, etc.), the publication of research findings in the form of scientific articles and monographs, and the supervision of doctoral theses. The research, basic or applied, can be carried out either within the framework of funded research programs or independently.
  • The administrative work mainly includes participation in the elaboration and decision-making by the university bodies and participation in the work of special committees or working groups, which may be formed to promote individual topics.

University scholars and contract teachers

The teaching work at the DBA is covered thanks to the supplementary assistance of temporary teaching staff hired with annual or six-month contracts. The teachers in this category have doctorates, are hired and are classified in a specific salary correspondence to the ranks of the faculty members, depending on their formal and substantive qualifications. The work of temporary teaching staff is basically educational.

Special Educational Staff

The members of the category of Special Educational Staff carry out special educational - teaching work at the HEIs and may be assigned independent teaching work. This category includes teaching staff who teach foreign languages or Greek as a foreign language, physical education, design, as well as fine and applied arts.

At the DBA, English language courses are offered by two members of the Greek Association of Teachers of Greek Language, who have a permanent working relationship with the DBA and are the following:

Laboratory Teaching Staff

The members of the Laboratory Teaching Staff category carry out laboratory-applied teaching work at HEIs, which consists mainly of conducting laboratory and clinical exercises, as well as conducting practical exercises in the field of application of the relevant sciences. Mrs. Vasiliki Vasiliou serves as an Laboratory Teaching Staff member at the Department. The Laboratory Teaching Staff members of the Business School have undertaken teaching work at the Department.

Special Technical Laboratory Staff

The members of the Special Technical Laboratory Staff category provide infrastructure work to the general operation of HEIs, offering specialized technical laboratory services for the better execution of their educational, research and applied work.

Emeritus Professors

The title of Emeritus Professor is conferred upon faculty members who have completed their academic service, in recognition of their long-standing and substantial contribution to the development of the Department, the advancement of scientific knowledge, and the shaping of its academic identity.

The first professor to be awarded the title of Emeritus (in 2003) was Mr. Stergios Babanasis, followed by Mr. Vasileios Angelis (in 2016) and Mr. Dimitrios Lagos (in 2021).

Honorary Professors

The Department of Business Administration, University of the Aegean has appointed two Honorary Professors, distinguished personalities of international standing with significant scientific and research contributions:

  • Dr. John Tribe, Professor and Head of Research in the Department of Tourism, School of Management, University of Surrey (United Kingdom), with international academic recognition and a substantial contribution to research and university education at a global level.
  • Sir Christopher Pissarides, Regius Professor at the London School of Economics, Professor of European Studies at the University of Cyprus, and President of the Cyprus National Economic Council, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences (2010), for his contribution to macroeconomic theory and economic policy.

Honorary Doctorates

The Department of Business Administration, University of the Aegean confers the title of Honorary Doctor upon distinguished individuals with internationally recognised contributions to science, society, culture, or public life, who have substantially advanced the values of knowledge, academic excellence, and social responsibility.

  • In 2022, the Department conferred the title of Honorary Doctor upon Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, in recognition of his spiritual, social, and international contribution, as well as his role in fostering public dialogue, education, and the connection between academic knowledge and contemporary societal challenges.
  • In 2025, the Department conferred the title of Honorary Doctor upon Mrs Marilena Theod. Nitsiakou, a second-generation member of the historic Th. Nitsiakos S.A. Group, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors and Commercial Director of the Group, in recognition of her longstanding and dynamic presence in the Greek agri-food industry, her contribution to strategic development, extroversion and innovation, as well as her human-centred entrepreneurial philosophy and substantial social contribution.
